Abstract

Innisfail born Adam Grossetti's play 'Mano Nera' conflates various actual occurrences and key individuals to create a condensed and dramatic version of a frightening episode in early twentieth century north Queensland history: the reign of La mano Nera or the Black Hand. Today this fictional narrative is studied by the year 10 preparation for Essential English class at Gilroy Santa Maria College, Ingham. Yet the issues that underpin the plot suggest the play could as usefully be employed in the history classroom to promote historical literacy and engagement.
