Abstract

This paper explores the role of the research manager and developer in supporting the supervisor in the selection of suitable applicants for HDR awards. While the research administrator can access guidelines and selection criteria to ensure applicants meet admission requirements consistent with qualification frameworks, there is a second step to the selection process. Selecting a suitable applicant involves the supervisor evaluating the potential of the applicant and their topic, and their fit to the research capacity of the supervisor and their research environment. The goal of all the admission process is selectin of a candidate who can progress to completion realising an examinable thesis and becoming an independent and employable researcher. The framework builds on notions of theoretical minimum (Susskind & Hrabavsky, 2014), factors influencing successful completion (Pitchforth et al, 2012), and principles of good supervisory practice (Austin, 2011; Lee, 2022).
