Abstract

[Extract] With the exception of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on 11th September, 2001, the first twenty years of the 21st century in the Western world have been relatively devoid of events that clearly marked a “before” and “after” in historical terms. In stark comparison, medicine and science have been characterized by two giant revolutions. If the 20th century was the century of inventions, the 21st has seen the development of a technological revolution that has changed forever how we communicate and share information.
