Abstract

Our study proposed to assess the correlaUon between the severity of diabetes with tuberculosis. The study sample size was 575 patients, of which gl were diabetic. There was an overall improvement in the s5rmptoms of patients along with weight gain. Sputum conversion to negativity were seen in 64.7o/o and improvement in cough were seen in 7 | .60/o of diabetic patients Ys 88.2o/o and 88.6% in non diabetic patients. Adverse effects such as gastritis, tingling and numbness, joint pain were significantly increased at the end of treatment in the diabetic group. By the 'Z' test for proportion, the AFB at 3'd followup in relation with FBS at 3.,r follow up has shown statistical significant difference; indicating higher sugar value means AFB positivity is high. Duration of chemotherapy is entirely dependent upon tJre control of diabetes and response of the patient to treatment. A longer antitubercular treatment course may be needed when blood sugar levels are inadequately controlled.
