Jon Brodie Memorial: The sources, fates and consequences of pollutants in tropical shelf systems
Journal Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
[Extract] On the 11th June 2020, our community mourned the passing of Professor Jon Edward Brodie. Jon was a highly regarded water quality scientist who worked for over 40 years across the ‘catchment to reef continuum’. His lifetime goal was to improve ways to manage marine ecosystems such as coral reefs and seagrass meadows, particularly within the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) but also across Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Myanmar and Yemen. He graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Inorganic Chemistry from the University of New South Wales in 1968, followed by the award of Masters in Environmental Chemistry from James Cook University (JCU) in 1978 and, more recently, a PhD from JCU in 2016. Jon held a range of science and management positions over his working life, some of which included: Lecturer and subsequently Director of the Institute of Natural Resources at the University of the South Pacific (Fiji), Senior Chemist at the Australian Centre for Tropical Freshwater Research (ACTFR – now TropWATER) at JCU, and Assistant Director – then Director of Research and Monitoring – then Director of Water Quality and Coastal Development, at the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. He re-joined TropWATER, JCU in 2001 as a Principal Research Scientist and leader of the ‘Catchment to Reef’ Research Group and finished his career as a Professor at the ARC Coral Reef Centre of Excellence, JCU, a position he held from 2016 until his passing.
