Australian Authors in the House of William Morrow: Writing Good Commercial Fiction for the US Market

Abstract

[Extract] For the writers discussed here, the US market for “good commercial fiction” provided a zone in which they positioned themselves and their work at various times during their career, ably assisted by literary agents, editors, publishers, and others directly involved in the production of their books. The investment in time, money, and reputation that these various collaborators contributed to each book project aimed to sustain the career of the author within this zone in order to achieve a return on this investment that would eventually pay the desired dividend. From modest-selling book projects that balanced the ledger or brought a small profit to blockbusters that brought significant financial returns for all involved, along with the prestige that led to subsidiary profits in serializations, paperback editions, translations, and film adaptations, the careers of these Australian writers in the US marketplace for good commercial fiction demonstrate the collaborations necessary to survive and prosper.
