Student mental wellbeing at ACAP: Resilience, support, and distress

Abstract

Background: The Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP) is committed to embedding student mental wellbeing within our curriculum and promoting this within our students. Additionally, the College works to ensure our students are provided with the necessary academic and personal support. The purpose of this research was to establish current student mental wellbeing and explore the student perspective. It was necessary to investigate whether this aspect of the curriculum content is translating to students’ learning and that students are aware of the support available. Methodological approach: ACAP students were invited to complete the Student Wellbeing Survey (N=168), exploring the themes of mental wellbeing, support options, and distress. Data was collected between April and July of 2021. Findings: Most students reported good mental wellbeing and resilience; however, many felt emotionally drained from studying. Many students knew who to contact if they were experiencing mental health problems, but student feelings regarding College support was mixed. Student disclosure and class content did not distress most students and trigger warnings were deemed beneficial. Impact: These findings, among many others, help to inform the College of the necessary work required to support students and promote student mental wellbeing. This data highlights what currently helps students and what needs to be improved. By continuing to monitor and record student wellbeing, we can assess which implementations are successful. This will also enable the College to adjust and improve our support in line with our changing, diverse environment.
