Tourism in the Tropics: Emerging themes and keyword analysis
Other Publication ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
A survey of tourism studies since 1997 highlights the continued multidisciplinary approach that is taken by researchers within the field to better explain the nature of human interests, activities, sites, and destinations that intersect the domestic and global tourism domain. This social network analysis (SNA) study focuses on tourism related to the tropics. Using the Web of Science database, 584 scholarly tourism works were retrieved published between 1997 and June 2021. The data was then further analyzed using the SNA to map out the specific types of emphasis that are relevant to tourism research and in particular the lead journals, themes, and primary scholars that shape the field. The objective of this chapter is to provide an overview of tourism studies in the tropics so that students, scholars, and even practitioners can have an insight into the discipline and future directions that parallel the ever-changing business environment in the tropics.
