Abstract

Beijing from Below is an important work on one of China's lost historic neighbourhoods, Dashalar in Beijing. In a book rich in detail and analysis, Harriet Evans takes the reader into a respectful and considered examination of the lives of Dashalar’s residents and their struggles to survive. In recording their oral histories, she restores their humanity and dignity, situates their experiences within the broader Chinese historiography, and brings attention and focus to the urban poor in both the Mao era and post-Mao China.
