Abstract

Replacement of soft and compressible soils with better material is probably one of the oldest and simplest ground improvement techniques in the world. The intention is to remove weak soils and replace them with competent materials. In construction also, Excavation and Replacement is considered a useful ground improvement technique. Base heave should also be given consideration when partial Excavation and Replacement is proposed. In an embankment situation, if the replacement material is expansive, it should be confined. Placement of replacement material in a partial removal situation also depends on the consistency of the material at the base of the excavation if the excavation is dry. Das and Sivakugan also provide analysis methods for layered systems, which could be adopted to assess the bearing capacity of ground improved with replacement soils. Partial or full replacement is a guaranteed method to reduce settlement under an embankment where soft clays are present.
