Abstract

Soft clays are very different to other weak geomaterials such as loose sands that require ground improvement. Soft clays and ground improvement have become major geotechnical challenges in civil engineering during the last three decades. Ground improvement dates back to ancient times, where attempts were made to improve the ground conditions for building roads, dwellings and other infrastructure. Technical criteria can be imposed by the principal, a design engineer who acts for the consultant, or based on government regulations. The main technical criteria can be summarised as follows: stability; and settlement. Usually, the settlement limits are imposed by structural engineers and civil engineers. In land development projects, total settlement criteria are equally important because of issues related to services and drainage, and because by limiting total settlements one would automatically limit differential settlement and grade changes. The chapter also provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
