Simulation of nitrate concentrations in the Willamette river, northwestern of the Oregon State, United States
Other Publication ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
The water is one of the most important natural resource, essential for life and human activities, but it becomes more and more scarce and deteriorating due to the increasing complexity of human development processes. "Thus, water has become a growing concern not only in relation to the quantity available, but mainly in relation to its quality resulting losses and restrictions on its many uses" (LIMA, 2001, p. 1). "In order that the use of the water as a resource receiving waste does not conflict with other uses, careful management is required with constant evaluations of their quality" (BARBOSA JR., 1997). To assist in the management, control and protection of water resources, it is important to use tools that enable the analysis and prognosis of water bodies. The mathematical models have the ability to encompass hydrological processes, physical, chemical and biological of the water courses, allowing the simulation of the river self-purification processes, as well as the simulation of alternatives for water quality recovery and helping hence taking decisions concerning the management of these resources (OPPA, 2007).
