Positive adjustment & growth indicators: beyond academic results & maladaptive behaviors
Conference Contribution ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
Children’s Aid Society (Melrose Home) caters to the needs of children and young persons(CYPs) affected by family violence, child abuse and neglect issues. As the Home moved closer to adopting a Person-centred or Rogerian approach in care, the Home sought a humanistic approach to evaluate the progress and growth of the residents under its roof. A team consisting of two professional teachers, a social worker and a community psychologist put togeher a series of surveys to collate and evaluate three domains of a resident’s life, namely academic, social behaviors and personal development. Changes in a resident’s school results (positively or negatively), his/her observable social behaviors across school, Home and family settings and resident’s self-reported learning outcomes for Home-organised life skills and personal development programmes were collated and analysed for each of the two 6-month periods during the pilot. A unique feature of this project was the attempt to triangulate multiple sources of information as well as the active inclusion of residents’ self-reporting. Using an Action Research model, this paper aims to share 3 aspects of the pilot project: 1) The implementation process, 2) The findings for both 6-month periods based on the indicators identified and 3)the reflectionsoftheteam which highlighted the challenges, learning points and future development of this effort. The authors envisioned that the findings may be helpful for other residential care professionals who are attempting to introduce similar evaluation effort in residential care settings or who are exploring the possibility to do so.
