Abstract

[Extract] Many of the behaviours reported since the onset of COVID-19 have been repeated across countries and continents: panic buying, stigmatisation and avoidance, suspicion, and irrationality. For example, who will not recall with some sense of wonder the widespread, COVID-related toilet-paper hoarding phenomenon (e.g., Borbon, 2020; Van Dyke et al., 2020)? It may either perplex or reassure people to know that such behaviours are not as uncommon as we might expect and that similar behaviours have been reported for centuries.
