Westbury Community Public Survey Report on Prison Proposal
Other Publication ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
[Extract] In response to the announcement of the proposed maximum security prison in Westbury in 2019 by the Tasmanian government, a group of residents formed a group entitled ‘Westbury Region against the Prison’ (WRAP). In collaboration with others, WRAP decided to seek out opinions on the proposal from local community members. To do so, they developed a survey with assistance from Dr Nick Osbaldiston. The short survey was designed to understand place value of the community at Westbury and then also their attitudes towards the prison. Volunteers door knocked 369 homes. 58 people declined to take the survey and 153 did not answer. Overall 160 people undertook the survey. The population of Westbury last census (ABS, 2016) was 2006 people. Thus, the sample of 160 provides a margin of error of about 7% (95% Confidence Level). Using this data, this report provides a snapshot of the types of attitudes that people have towards the prison.
