Abstract
Ben Silverstein’s book focuses on one moment of native governance in Australia. The New Deal for Aborigines, issued by Commonwealth Minister for the Interior John McEwen in February 1939, has conventionally been regarded as, in C.D. Rowley’s words, a ‘foundation of the assimilation policy’. Without denying its assimilationist aims, Silverstein invites us to see the New Deal as an instance of indirect rule.
