Community-based tourism in villages surrounding Borobudur Temple in Central Java and an inclusive and sustainable path to 2030 Agenda
Conference Publication ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
In early 2019 Central Java was selected by the Indonesian central government as one of two provinces to have its economic growth accelerated, planned to be achieved within 5 years. Having been given this target, Central Java's government led by its Development Planning Agency has planned several strategies to boost its economic growth. One of the strategies is to optimize its tourism sector as this domain has potential to boost economic growth, especially in areas classified as natural, cultural, man-made, and special interests. Among these categories, Borobudur Temple -the world's biggest Buddhist temple is arguably the most visited tourist destination. The purpose of this paper is to review of the current tourism development in Central Java and examine the problems that may limit the potential growth of this sector. We offer an alternative sustainable solution to optimize the tourism sector by focusing on the development of 20 villages with their own comparative advantages surrounding the temple that could support the tourism sector through local participation in Community-Based Tourism industry.
