Abstract

[Extract] The grassland steppes of northern China and Mongolia have captured the world’s attention for centuries. The dynasties, landscapes and herder lifestyles associated with these steppes have fascinated generations of peoples, spawning numerous legends and myths. While the dynasties, landscapes and lifestyles have changed through time, the grassland steppes still engross the world’s scientific community, regional governments and broader populace. They continue to support the livelihoods of millions of herder households while supplying a range of environmental and ecological services.
