Abstract

Today, more than ever before, new scholars finish their graduate work only to face an abyss of uncertainty and insecurity. As emerging scholars, we look outward to the university sector that we have inherited and are worried. Times in academia are changing—there are few tenure track jobs; competition for grants, postdocs, and even short-term contracts is fierce; and there are many more high-quality candidates than there is work to go around. Universities are encouraged to exploit casual adjunct or sessional faculty, and toxic work cultures in the academy have seen serious mental health illnesses spread among university professionals worldwide. Academics are tasked with finding increasingly creative ways of traversing this abyss. The system pushes us to compete with one another, increasing everyone's precarity. While healthy competition can be useful, we can combat these dire straits by tilting the frame; we propose a commitment to working together as a strategy of resistance within the neoliberal academy.
