Abstract
[Extract] It is hard to counter the perspective discussed by Tundi Agardy when the evidence she presents is so compelling and the peer-reviewed publications that she cites strengthen her concerns. So my comments below are limited to addressing a few of Tundi's specific points. Protecting the best possible area, provided it is managed effectively, can still achieve a lot for marine conservation. Readers may not be aware that when the inshore boundary of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Region was proclaimed in 1975, the formal boundary description was "along the coastline of Queensland at low water". Low water mark constantly moves because of erosion and accretion, and is frequently underwater, so mapping it is impractical.
