Abstract
[Extract] In a print culture where book publishing is small-scale and sporadic, periodicals will assume a larger significance, especially for writers who, unlike readers, must rely primarily on local outlets. 'Periodical publication' covers magazines, reviews and journals. The array of terms suggests the diversity of periodical forms, from the commercial to the scholarly and avant-garde. Australian periodical publication after the war shows a move away from independent commercial magazines and a progressive consolidation around, on the one hand, quarterly reviews and, on the other, commercial magazines owned by large media organisations.
