Urban green spaces and childhood obesity in (sub)tropical Queensland, Australia
Other Publication ResearchOnline@JCUAbstract
The subtropical and tropical climates of Queensland, Australia are ideally suited to growing fruits, vegetables and herbs throughout much of the year. Farmers' markets and community gardens are increasingly popular in both urban and suburban areas and, for some population groups, contribute to the promotion and availability of fresh produce. However, food networks are complex and the availability of fresh produce for some citizens does not necessarily result in increased availability or behaviour change for all (e.g. Connelly et al., 2011; McClintock, 2013). This chapter is concerned with the availability of fresh produce in light of rising levels of overweight children and childhood obesity in Australia.
