Environmental DNA (eDNA) survey of the Tilapia in the Fitzroy Basin

Abstract

Objectives: This report presents the results of an environmental DNA (eDNA) survey of Tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) in the Fitzroy River Basin, Queensland in August 2014. The objectives of this survey were to: i) Using eDNA as the detection method, determine the presence/absence of tilapia in various water bodies within the Fitzroy River Basin.ii) Compare the results from the eDNA survey with the results from electrofishing conducted at the same sites. [Extract] Discussion & Recommendations: In summary, based on the eDNA results and electrofishing it appears as if tilapia are spreading throughout the Fitzroy River Basin. In some water bodies they appear to be at reasonable densities as indicated by eDNA and the success of electrofishing, while in others low eDNA detection levels (but still the positive presence of tilapia DNA detected) suggest lower abundances, or more localized infestations.
