Abstract
[Extract] Cancer is a worldwide health issue with an alarming incidence and mortality. It was estimated that 12.7 million new cases of cancer have occurred worldwide in 2008 (age-standardised incidence of 180.8/100,000 population) [cruk.org/cancerstats]. According to the same source of information, 13% of all deaths worldwide were attributed to cancers and an estimated 169.3 million years of healthy life were lost globally because of cancer in 2008 [www.cancerresearchuk.org], and if current trends continue, around 13.2 million deaths from cancers will occur worldwide each year by 2030 [cruk.org/cancerstats; info.cancerresearchuk.org/cancerstats].
