Abstract
[Extract] The artist's journey is a long one; it begins in a moment of wonderment, a moment of illumination – of seeing things through new eyes beyond accepted conventions. Somehow a light is ignited which burns inside the artist, propelling them to tell a story, express an idea, or search for resolution to an unanswered question. The true creative practice works against the safe path in order to discover new insights, yet achieving this is merely a glimpse of the possible and a re-kindling which drives the artist's oeuvre. For many artists the journey is started, but rarely does it become a career. There are no maps to the artistic journey; there is only the folly of seeking the unknown, of creating and innovating in an environment of no rules or regulations - the arts industry is a road lined with pot-holes and hazards, it is fickle in its training, ruthless in its networking, and is renowned for a lack of security or satisfaction. Perhaps artistic success is written only in the minds of those able to observe the artist's journey from the outside in, as success and failure often mirror each other in the artists' mind.
