Port of Karumba long-term seagrass monitoring: November 2013

Key Findings: 1. Annual monitoring results show seagrasses in the Port of Karumba were in a good condition in 2013 with biomass (density), area, species composition and reproductive capacity of the monitoring meadow all close to or above the long term average. 2. Results of the seagrass monitoring indicate that the marine environment was in a healthy condition. 3. The good condition of seagrasses means they are likely to remain resilient to planned maintenance dredging activities in 2014 without the requirement for additional mitigation measures. 4. River flow, temperature and long term tidal exposure cycles explain a significant component of the inter-annual variability in seagrass biomass and distribution. 5. The condition of seagrasses in Karumba and other monitoring locations in northern Cape York and the Gulf of Carpentaria is in contrast to many of the seagrass areas on Queensland's east coast that were significantly impacted by major climate events in 2010/2011 and remain in a poor or vulnerable condition.
