Abstract

Recent years have seen the emergence of a prepared consumer food sector in Ireland due to changing social, economic and demographic factors. An analysis of this sector shows that Ireland has developed competitive advantages for products such as infant food, processed meats, pizzas, fresh bread among others and has improved its competitive performance. An intensely competitive market, innovation is the key to growth in most sectors. Small producers seem to lack the capital that is required to increase scale of production, launch new products and enter export markets. Increasing scale may prove to be a key success factor along with a renewed focus on quality and food safety issues.
