Abstract
[Extract] In its July 1938 issue, Man: The Australian Magazine For Men (1936-74) promoted advance subscription by declaring that the next issue would be the "MOST LITERARY YET - ." Getting Australian Post approval for circulation was a big deal for Man, and this grab for literary status was clearly a tactic to promote the magazine's respectability. But despite this strategy, it cannot go unnoticed that the magazine's literariness is also an asset it advertises to its general public. For a publication that would gain a certain reputation on the back of its war-time girly pin-ups, this declaration of intent asks us to think again about Man and its commitment to literary publication.
