Abstract
[Extract] This chapter will discuss the history of grounded theory and the various philosophical positions that researchers can assume, which will influence their choice of which package of methodology/methods to adopt. For the purposes of this chapter, we identify three main genres of grounded theory: traditional, evolved, and constructivist. Traditional grounded theory is underpinned by postpositivism, evolved grounded theory is founded on symbolic interactionism and constructivist grounded theory is has its roots in constructivism. Differences between grounded theory methodologies will be outlined in relation to implementing a study, including the position of the researcher, processes of data generation and collection, and data analysis. The development of a modern day dissemination strategy for the findings from a grounded theory study will also be discussed in relation to impact and innovation.
