Effect of temperature on growth and survival of the tropical freshwater crayfish, Cherax quadricarinatus (von Martens)(Decapoda, Parastacidae)

Abstract

Cherax quadricarinatus is a freshwater crayfish indigenous to southern Papua New Guinea and northern Australia. In Australia it forms the basis of a rapidly developing aquaculture industry. An experiment was conducted to determine the effect of temperature (range 20 to 34°C) on the growth and survival of juvenile C. quadricarinatus. Survival of crayfish was significantly less at 34°C, than at 20, 24, 28 or 32°C. Best growth was achieved at 28 and 24°C. Significantly less growth was evident at 32, 20 and 34°C, respectively. Comparison with the temperature tolerance of Macrobrachium rosenbergii suggests that C. quadricarinatus has a greater geographic potential for aquaculture.
