Abstract

[Extract] The need for Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) arose in the context of changes occurring in the business worldwide. The policy level measures and legislations, i.e., deregulation of financial markets, technological innovation, the open market policies and the like are affecting the composition and structure of the industry. These changes in the workplace have brought about a new set of issues and problems affecting the employees and their families. Some of the issues are problems of drug use, substance abuse, occupational stress, emotional illness, voluntary retirement issues, golden handshake, post-retirement issues, termination and relocation of workplace, career advancement, financial and legal counselling, etc. The emergence of these new problems, in the Indian context, widens the scope for engaging EAP professionals and EA services particularly.
