Abstract

[Extract] Each of the chapters in this volume addresses the natural and/or anthropogenic origin and pathway of important geochemical species and compounds in the estuarine environment. To do this, case examples are used where appropriate, spanning many contrasting climatic zones. The analytical tools and numerical models to assess measurement and predict behavior are described. Ultimately, the goal of understanding the geochemistry of estuaries and coasts is to manage our human activities in a better manner. Therefore, establishing critical limits of concentration and prediction of effect on the biological populations and human exposure become a major requirement. This chapter provides both a chapter-by-chapter abridged summary of the current state of knowledge and a pointer to future directions and objectives of the science of estuarine geochemistry.
