Dancing into connection: the Laura Aboriginal Dance and Cultural Festival
Journal Publication ResearchOnline@JCUHenry, Rosita
Abstract
This paper concerns the significance of performances at an Indigenous dance festival in Australia. At the Laura Aboriginal Dance and Cultural Festival in Cape York, Indigenous peoples confront global demands for authentic »traditional culture«. Within the intercultural space of the festival, performers assert a political and economic presence, and experience a form of agency, that is elsewhere not available to them. The performers at the festival present Aboriginal dance not as a given dance tradition, but as a dynamic process of cultural twnsmission and embodiment of knowledge.
