Harnessing the power of new technologies to map and monitor coral reefs (Old ID 25101)

James Cook University
Role

Principal Investigator

Description

Coral reefs are changing rapidly in response to environmental and climatic conditions and human impacts. Understanding and managing these changes requires broad scale habitat mapping and monitoring. Google Earth Engine is a powerful new tool for mapping and geospatial analysis. This project will develop methods to create habitat maps of coral reefs at previously unattainable spatial and temporal scales by harnessing Google Earth Engine to process large volumes of satellite imagery. Drone-based imagery will be used to ground truth the maps produced. The outcomes of this project will be valuable to researchers, managers, industries and communities reliant on coral reefs.
