Description
Epicardial adipose tissue covers the external surface of the heart. This visceral fat deposit is in intimate communication with the underlying myocardium, sharing a blood supply and interacting through chemical communication. The lipid profile of epicardial adipose tissue has not been fully characterised and may be distinct in adipose tissue from patients with diabetes. This project seeks to characterise the chemical composition of epicardial adipose tissue from diabetic vs. non-diabetic patients undergoing open heart surgery, surveying different parts of the heart.
