Description

Southern Gulf NRM and the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries hosted a two-day event focused on improving, restoring, and managing soil and pasture health. Day One in Cloncurry featured talks from experts like Jane Evans, Kaitie Hay, and Dr. Kendrick Cox (DAF) on flood recovery, legumes, and improved pastures. Lucy Gardner (JCU) discussed land condition monitoring, while Dr. Jack Koci (JCU) spoke on the 2019 flood impact. Dhiraj Gajera (TNQ Drought Hub) covered soil health and fertility, Dr. Wendy Williams, and Nicole Parker (UQ) highlighted biocrusts, Dr. Andrew Marshall (Northern Australia Climate Program) shared insights on the Climate Mate program, and Jenny Milson (Paddock Plants) discussed pasture species and weeds. Day Two at Lara Downs included Colin Burnett, Jane Evans, Kaitie Hay, and Dr. Kendrick Cox discussing sown pastures and legume trials, along with Mitchell grass downs recovery post-2019 floods. We also learned about land condition monitoring and plant identification with Jenny Milson. The event was well-received, and a YouTube video was produced to showcase the event highlights, further extending the project’s outreach. Day 1 – 21st May, Cloncurry – 25 total attendees (incl. 2 virtually): 2 SGNRM, 3 QDAF, 1 TNQDH, 5 Specialists/speakers: Jenny Milson, Dr Wendy Williams and Nicky Parker. 15 other participants including land managers and managers.
