Description

I organize and chair this workshop every year at James Cook University and the Watsonville Community Centre in Tablelands. I also bring the community members to visit our research facilities at JCU, where I show the research facilities. I also invite other JCU academics to share their experiences and knowledge on biodiscovery projects, intellectual property rights, and promoting their knowledge. This workshop is held every year to support, build, and empower the Mbabaram Aboriginal community. A community development support fee is also provided for i) annual researcher-community meetings to discuss bicultural knowledge and biodiscovery potential, ii) paying traditional owner fees as compensation for attending workshops, and iii) legal advice fee for negotiating benefit sharing agreements as per the Queensland Biodiscovery Act. Field assistants are recruited from the community and trained in the documentation and protection of their knowledge.
