Description
Led the development, operation and strategic growth of the JCU Exercise Physiology Clinic, a university-based student-led healthcare service providing clinical exercise physiology services to the Townsville community. A key impact of the clinic was its integration of community service delivery with authentic work-integrated learning. The clinic supported substantial growth in student placement capacity, including undergraduate, postgraduate and external university placements, while providing students with supervised exposure to chronic disease management, group facilitation, interprofessional practice, community engagement and hospital-linked rehabilitation pathways. It also supported applied research and service-development initiatives through partnerships with Townsville Hospital, Mater Hospital, Townsville Cancer Centre, renal and dialysis services, youth mental health services, aged care providers and community health groups. Between 2014 and 2023, the clinic generated an estimated $450,000 in clinical revenue, supported approximately 460 student placements, delivered an estimated 30,000+ community-based exercise physiology services, and contributed to at least 15 clinical, research and community initiatives. Its innovation and impact were recognised externally, including being named a finalist in the 2018 ESSA Industry Awards — Practice of the Year. These outcomes demonstrate the clinic’s role as a sustainable student-led healthcare service model that improved access to exercise physiology services while strengthening clinical education, interprofessional learning, community partnerships and applied health research.
