Patient-Centred Care (PCC) is a holistic approach “respectful of, and responsive to, individual patient preferences, needs and values”. PCC is integral to providing quality primary healthcare through improving patient health outcomes without increasing healthcare costs. With the many barriers rural patients face in accessing affordable and quality specialist-led healthcare, it is essential rural GPs provide adequate PCC to drive the process. This project quantifies the level of PCC experienced by rural patients in GP consultations associated with specialist-led care, and explores GPs’ experiences and potential barriers related to telehealth and delivering PCC.

Evaluation of research opportunities and research engagement among junior doctors (Revised)

This project will evaluate the availability and uptake of research opportunities and the level of research engagement among junior doctors in two Northern QLD regional hospitals. The study will recruit a mixed methods approach, including a desktop review, an online survey and focus group discussions and interviews with interns, pre-vocational doctors, hospitals’ research staff and clinician researchers to quantify doctors' level of research engagement and competency, as well as exploring their experiences of research activities. The study outcomes will identify potential strategies that research support services can apply to cocreate a collaborative and productive research environment within a hospital setting.

Queensland Junior Doctors Project: Recruitment and Retention

Using a qualitative approach, the study explored the issues related to recruitment, retention and mobility of junior doctors in Queensland. Specifically, the reasons and intentions for choosing the location of internship positions and beyond, and factors influencing doctors’ decisions for staying in, leaving or returning to metro- versus non-metropolitan hospitals. Data were collected through interviews with Postgraduate Year(PGY)1-5 doctors in five selected hospitals in QLD.

Review of the Medical Students’ Selection Process; incorporating insights from stakeholders

The Medicine selection process has changed significantly in the past few years, with the removal of the written application component of the selectin process and through the introduction of an online application portal. This study aims to evaluate these changes through a) investigating medicine program applicants’ and medicine interview panelists’ perspectives on the selection process through an online post selection survey b) exploring the panelists' and MBBS students' experiences and perspectives regarding the selection process through interview and focus group and, c) measuring the association between the application and selection criteria and the academic performance of MBBS students

Strengthening rural healthcare delivery through value-based allied health rural generalism: A place-based, co-designed approach to inform workforce growth and support integrated healthcare

Growth and sustainability of allied health workforce in rural and remote Queensland have been ongoing challenges, contributing to reduced health service access and increased burden and financial costs on the rural health system. In a multidisciplinary place-based approach, this study aims to inform effective strategies to optimise Allied Health Rural Generalist (AHRG) training pathways, employment models and interprofessional collaborations in Northwestern Queensland.
