Biography
I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Heart, Sepsis and Trauma Research Laboratory (HSTRL) in the College of Medicine and Dentistry, at James Cook University (JCU). After graduating with a University Medal from JCU with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physiology and Pharmacology and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, I joined the HSTRL in 2008 where I undertook a PhD developing a small-volume resuscitation solution comprising adenosine, lidocaine and magnesium (ALM) for the treatment of hemorrhagic shock and traumatic injury. Since 2012 I have been working with the US Military to translate ALM resuscitation fluid into the field, and in addition, I am focussed on improving emergency trauma care for patients in regional, rural and remote Australia. As well as haemorrhage shock and traumatic injury, my areas of expertise are coagulopathy, orthopaedics, surgery and surgical trauma, traumatic brain injury, burns, cardiovascular medicine, ischaemia-reperfusion, sepsis, infection, prehospital medicine, and rural and remote health. I am an ethics and research governance specialist, with 5 years' experience as a human research ethics advisor and currently hold the position of Deputy Chair of the JCU Human Research Ethics Committee. I have a strong background in science communication and received a 2021 Queensland Young Tall Poppy Award by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science.
