Biography
Cate Nagle has a co-joint appointment as the Professor of Nursing and Midwifery at James Cook University and the Townsville Hospital and Health Service. She is the Director of the Centre for Nursing and Midwifery Research and the Academic Lead (Research) for Nursing and Midwifery. An experienced nurse and midwife, Cate also has postgraduate qualifications in Diabetes Education and Public Health.
Cate’s research program has a focus on improving quality and safety of care with themes of public health midwifery, improving the woman’s/patient’s experience of care, facilitating informed decision making and communicating risk.
Cate co- led the 2018 Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s Development of Midwife standards for practice in Australia. She has contributed to policy development for midwifery and maternity services at both state and federal government levels.
Cate currently supervises 8 (3 external) HDR students and she has received $3M in external research funding as chief investigator/mentor. Current projects include:

Improving recognition and response to clinical deterioration in maternity care
Evalutaion of a decison aid app for prenatal testing of fetal abnormalities
Understanding the effects of low to moderate alcohol use in pregnancy
Decreasing the incidence of postpartum haemorrhage (PPH)
Understanding teenagers’ experience of pregnancy care
Increasing breastfeeding rates in overweight and obese women
