Biography

Dr Satine Winter is a Lecturer in Inclusive Education and Educational Psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Disability/Diversity

Dr Winter is proactive about realising the rights of children and adults with disability and those from diverse backgrounds in society. Satine’s experience with disability and diversity spans raising children who identify as having autism, multiple disabilities or as gifted/twice-exceptional, teaching in special and inclusive education including mainstream settings and teaching in the higher education sector in Initial Teacher Education undergraduate and postgraduate courses including inclusive education, special education, indigenous education and disability/diversity.

Expertise

Dr Winter's expertise is specifically in Autism Spectrum Disorders, families of children with ASD, collaborating with parents and professionals and the rights of children with disabilities. Satine's experience includes teaching autism postgraduate courses in the Autism Centre of Excellence, Griffith University. Satine's expertise also covers:

  • Disability & Diversity across multiple educational settings
  • Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD)

Research

Dr Winter is a Fellow with The Cairns Institute, James Cook University and an Adjunct Research Fellow, Griffith Institute for Educational Research, Griffith University.

Satine actively researches in the field of autism, disability, inclusive education, policy/legislation and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and is passionate about translating research into practice. For example, please see the Autism CRC Knowledge Centre - Structured Teaching for some examples of an eLearning package developed by Dr Satine Winter for teachers on how to help students with autism (& others) in the mainstream classroom with executive functioning skills. Partnerships - Catholic Education

Dr Satine Winter was a member of the Catholic Education Community Consultative Committee in the development of Newman Catholic College being built (in stages) and co-located on the JCU Cairns campus. Dr Winter is now a board member for Newman Catholic College.
