Biography

Faith Alele is a Medical Doctor and an adjunct Senior Lecturer in Public Health at James Cook University. She is currently a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs. She obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from Igbinedion University, Okada, Nigeria in 2010. She also earned her Master of Public Health and Tropical Medicine degree with distinction (2017) and a PhD in Health (2022) from James Cook University (JCU), Australia. Dr Faith Alele worked as a Public Health Clinician in rural Southwestern Nigeria with extensive clinical experience in managing health conditions in tropical settings. She undertook various projects focused on maternal and perinatal health, infectious diseases (Ebola, Lassa fever, HIV/TB) and non-communicable diseases. Dr Faith Alele has vast research experience, which cuts across Public Health, Medical Education, Occupational Health and exceptional heat illness-related research.

Teaching: Dr Faith Alele has strong experience in teaching and curriculum development. She is passionate about improving students learning experiences and she has provided significant and innovative teaching leadership as the subject coordinator for Epidemiology in Public Health and Health Professional Research at JCU. As a testament to her innovative teaching, she was a recipient of the JCU 2022 Learning and Teaching Innovation grant.

Research: Dr Faith Alele’s research interests include infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, neglected tropical diseases, and digital health. She is a recipient of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH) 2022 Early Career Grants Programme and has attracted $330,000 in research grants. She has over 45 impactful publications in peer-reviewed journals and also published a press book on research methods for undergraduatehealth profession students. She has been involved in the supervision of Honours (2), Masters (2) and PhD (2) students from diverse cultural backgrounds with timely completion. Dr Alele is a member of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, the Association for Medical Education in Europe and the Australasian Epidemiological Association. She also serves as an editorial board member for different international journals.

Service and Engagement: Dr Faith Alele has numerous collaborations nationally and internationally. She served as the treasurer for the Early and Middle Career Researchers group at JCU between 2021 and 2022 and was also part of the working transition group in 2023. She also served as the Treasurer and Academic Liaison Officer for the Nigerian Community in Townsville, providing academic support for new and current students in the institution.

  1. Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Lassa fever and COVID-19 Co-infection among patients in Ondo State, Nigeria. Funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Grant - RSTMH’s 2022 Early Career Grants Programme.
  2. Rural Generalists Perspectives on the Utility of Advanced Specialist Training. Funded by the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine - Education Research Grant.
  3. Retention of JCU basic medical sciences influence on entry knowledge testing and need for early educational intervention of post graduate GP registrars. Funded by the Australian College of Rural & Remote Medicine - Education Research Grant
