Biography
Daniel is an English for academic purposes (EAP) practitioner and educational linguist with 20 years’ experience teaching English to a range of ages, levels and nationalities. He holds a M. Litt in Applied Linguistics from Sydney University and is a PhD candidate in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies at the University of Leeds. Daniel specialises in academic writing, drawing on frameworks from linguistics and sociology to give students access to the language and knowledge practices valued in their field and ways of demonstrating this understanding. At JCU, Daniel works with students to help them better communicate their research, advance disciplinary knowledge and highlight the value of their contributions. He enjoys creating inclusive and supportive learning environments where students feel safe to challenge themselves, develop the confidence and capability to take risks, and reflect on their learning to better understand who succeeds in education, how and why.
Daniel's research interests seek to better understand disciplinary and discipline-specific knowledge, curricular and pedagogic practices. He is a PhD candidate at the University of Leeds, conducting a project that draws on Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) to reveal the nature of the epistemological complexities involved in EAP knowledge, semiotic and discursive practices.
